Abstract

China has made significant progress in expanding its education system over the past few decades, striving to provide universal access to education and enhance educational attainment nationwide. However, disparities between urban and rural areas continue to persist, especially in terms of educational quality, resources, and opportunities. This paper explores the differences in educational opportunities, outcomes, and policies between urban and rural China. It examines the structural, economic, and social factors contributing to these disparities, such as access to educational resources, teacher quality, school infrastructure, and opportunities for higher education. The paper also reviews government policies designed to address these imbalances, including the Compulsory Education Law, rural education development initiatives, and digital education strategies. Despite these efforts, challenges remain, particularly in rural areas, where outdated infrastructure, teacher shortages, and financial barriers hinder educational outcomes. This paper concludes by discussing the policy responses that have been put in place and suggests areas for further improvement in bridging the gap between urban and rural education in China.
